so choose a race skill base and a path line that you will follow then go out and do quests standard mmo

It is all about how you want to look, pick the race you like the most. The Race skills can be ignored, you won't use them.

Once you picked your race make your character and make it perfect for you.

Then you pick your story steps and start playing.

Complete the first map area your in and then just keep playing.

The point of GW2 is to make your character look good, or the way you want it and to have fun. The first time exploring the world is the best so take your time and enjoy it. I recommend joining, not making, a guild. With others this game becomes more fun.

This is not like most other MMO's, the level cap can be reached very quickly and the end game stuff can be done straight away. End game and pre end game in GW2 are the same thing. The only areas of the game you can not get to are dungeons yet as you have not reached that level. That won't take too long though as I said leveling is not hard.

Once you Reach level 80 just try and get some Rare gear, the yellow one. Remember Accessories, rings and Amulets give you a lot of your stats. So use the Trading Post to get appropriate level versions of these for your character. And a good weapon.

Also when you start just focus on getting greens and blues and either use them or sell them.

Oh and the class you want to play as matters, though you won't be pushed into any roles in this game.

Warrior. Good fast melee DPS.
Guardian. Tough and can take on most things easily.
Elementalist. Hard learning curve can be as good as all other classes. But you have to work hard at it.
Mesmer, a good class can do many things. Can take some getting use to.
Thief. DPS and has stealth.
Engineer. AOE DPS with gadgets.
Ranger. Has a pet uses ranged weapons mostly. Has some Melee.
Necromancer. Great at conditions and single target damage. Has minions to summon and in a recent patch they were made very good.

Don't you just get a choice of being a blue fairy or a red fairy????
