Haswell-E and x99 launches in a couple of weeks with a few good new features.

By the time Windows 9 is released, they should have ironed out the BIOS kinks, and it seems like the perfect time to upgrade.

I'm expecting uber rigs from @GoRedwings and @MG

GTX 880 should be out soon, too ;)

    We need a new game...

It might be time to upgrade from my i7-3960x. Then again, 32gb of DDR4 memory is going to be ruinously expensive...

I am looking to upgrade in the near future, might be worth looking into.

On the other hand, I am sorely tempted to get a 4k monitor, which will require a graphics card upgrade - I suspect an i7-3960x will be sufficiently powerful for quite some time to come.

I am supposed to be saving my pennies guys!!

You'll need to feed a 4k monitor some SLI goodness, therefore the extra PCI lanes of x99 are a must.

I'm not planning on changing my FX 8350 any time soon. I dislike Intel for a number of reasons so decided, after some failed Intel CPU's, to go over to the green team as a long term buy and stick to GPU upgrades going forward. I even went for 16GB of 2400MHz RAM to make sure the platform keeps on keeping on for as long as possible.

4K... not for gaming with a sensible budget (dual top of the range cards is nowhere near sensible budget, but then neither are 4K monitors...). The frame rates are still too low for consistent gaming at the moment and I don't think the next releases will fix that, not for single GPU setups anyway. It will get there but not soon enough to make me skip from 1920x1200 up to 4K resolutions. I'm getting myself a 2560x1600 monitor next because that is likely what I'll be able to run with my single GPU system (not a fan of dual GPU, not even with the mature drivers that are out).

I am more interested in DDR4 than the CPUs AMD and Intel will be releasing. I want to see how much of a difference it makes and how well integrated graphics do with the improved bandwidth.

Totally sticking to my current setup. 1080p until my TV is 4K. I don't think 4K programs will be out for 2-3 years in any real numbers.

Having said that Windows has 4K scaling issues still, maybe not with the next version but 7 definitely does ( 8 and 8.1 I'm not sure about). 2560x1600 is about the sweet spot for me if I can find that resolution at 24" rather than the stupidly sized 28-30" which is too big for my desk.

By scaling issues I mean the reading of text properly without distorting icons; it is mostly because Windows is designed for the current HD monitors that are out and not for the ridiculous size of 4K monitors. Apparently Linux has less issues but then it has more issues dealing with graphics drivers and dual monitors so I am still not ready to switch to Linux.

Well, for the first time ever I've talked myself out of an upgrade. My 2600k isn't struggling with anything atm, so there's not much point. It is, however, time for a slight refresh. Soundblaster ZXR and Fidelio X1 headphones currently winging their way through the world to Dunston :)

I find myself in agreement with the prevailing sentiment - an upgrade is not required at this point. All my computing kit is sufficient for my needs.

I have resolved to be a good boy and save my pennies!

I may not have supported your purchase but I would like to know the gorky details :D

No, I have not upgraded to more absorbent paper towels!

I haven't gone entirely mad and purchased a Haswell-E system. Only the eight core version seems to be worth upgrading to from my current i7-3960x. Alas, that would cost more than what I have just ordered; a new gaming laptop. Specifically, a MySN P304 which is a re-branded Clevo W230SS. I've ordered it with an i7-4712MQ and a 2560 x 1440 display. I am very much looking forward to receiving it sometime next week :)

I spent some time this morning this morning looking at the reviews. It looks as though you boys on quad cores are going to want to upgrade ASAP! ;)

Your 13.3" display needs an upgrade waaaaaay before my quad.

2560 * 1440 is immense for a 13.3" display. It's arrived in the UK, so hopefully I will get it either tomorrow or Thursday. Happy days!

Hmm I heard my name being mentioned and logged on!

I am not going to lie. I am tempted. I don't need a hex core or an octo core chip. But that still doesn't stop me from being tempted. And in fact nothing has impressed me from Intel since the 2600k was released. And from an AMD perspective nothing since the 4800x2.

I have most of the bits here just need a cpu, motherboard, ram. Didn't really like the 4770k setup.

I have been intrigued by the 5960x and 5930k. Something like an Asus x99 deluxe or rampage extreme and for my uses 16gb of ram is enough. My thinking is there is not enough performance increase between the 5820k and the 5930k unless you are running multi card setups which I have done over the years. The 5960k does seem to offer a slight performance increase over the 5930k but you will always pay a hefty premium to get the last percentile of performance. I have no problem paying for premium items. It goes back to the adage 'you get what you pay'. My biggest gripe and I know this will happen to me if I pull the trigger is the silicon lottery you play.

I am not the type of person who can accept a poor clocking cpu or gfx card. I don;t expect to get a golden chip which does stupid speeds or extremely low volts. In fact in the years I have been tinkerin about there was only ever one chip that seemed to do very well for me and that was the Q9550.

I even returned a EVGA classified 780 ti because it clocked less than my current 780 ti.

If I knew I would get a 5960x which did 4.6ghz then i would be all over it. But in reality I probably get one that would only do 4.0-4.1ghz and it would bug me. I know it sounds silly but when I had the evga classified 780ti I could not sleep because I could not let it go that it was a premium product and it could not beat my standard 780ti.

From what I read so far about the Haswell-e they run hot very hot which is not a problem for me per se as I do have a proper watercooling setup standing by. I bought it on a whim just in case I could be assed to w/c.

I don't know If I will change my setup to Haswell-e atm. But I don't really seem to be interested in skylake or broadwell. In a matter of fact until AMD provide a chip which offers a serious alternative I see future Intel upgrades as incremental rather than a major performance leap. And while the Kman seems convinced by the amd offering of cpu's I remain largely unconvinced for the forseeable future.

4k monitors are now affordable enough if you are planning that route but it's a waste of my time. At least till the next gen of gfx cards are out. And also the pc elitist/snob within me would not touch any monitor 4k or not, if it doesn't have a dell and ips somewhere on the box.

I would love to upgrade but the 2600k has served me well.
